Developers – Tell Us What You Think About Mash-Ups

4DK is actively seeking feedback from developers about how our context rich, mash-up capabilities can help you save time and money.  We would love to get your feedback on the APIs you are most interested in working with so we can make sure they are on our roadmap.

Are you happy with the time it takes you to mash-up services now?  Would having access to a suite of common API functions that you could mash-up with a quick script make your life easier? What languages are you developing your apps in now?  Have you moved away from carrier apps stores in favor of Apple or Android - if so why?  Are there devices that you want to target for development but have stayed away from because they are difficult to work with?  Would you like to be able to access common context capabilities from devices through a network API?

Your opinion matters to us.  Please take a few minutes to tell us what you think.  You can reply to this blog or you can send an email to vic@4dk.com

We want to enable the best developer experience ever.  Your thoughts and feedback will help us.

My incredibly helpful email to our CMO

I’m sure you’ve already intuitively guessed that this is the only process that really works, but I thought I’d codify it a bit.

Technical Documentation Process:

  1. Ask engineer how the damn thing works.
  2. Deafening silence.
  3. Later … Crickets.
  4. Later … Tumbleweed.
  5. Just start writing something. Anything.
  6. Give this something to the engineer.
  7. Watch engineer become quite upset at how badly you’ve missed the point of everything.
  8. As the engineer berates you, in between insults he will also throw off nuggets of technical information.
  9. Collect these nuggets, as they are the only reliable technical information you will receive.
  10. Try like hell to weave together this information into something enlightening and technically accurate.
  11. Go to step 6.

Mobile Trends 2020

Interesting presentation by Rudy De Waele of m-trends.org…

“…I have been writing down my predictions in mobile & wireless for a couple of years now. This year I thought it was the time to move on and do something different, so I asked some of my personal heroes in mobile to write down their five most significant trends for the coming decade.”

What do you think of Android 2.0? Because we are in love :)

Developers we want to know what you think.  We are looking at a SuperCool Android 2.0 adapter for SCout 2.0 (coming soon…) We want to hear what you love, what you don’t love so much, what you wish you could do but can’t, etc.  We know what we want to do - bring fabulous amounts of mobile-derived context data to your applications; and to give you the ability to adapt those applications based on context and access to an amazing array of enablers.

A lot of you are not too happy with Android Market, we feel your pain.  It would be so nice if Google is really working on carrier-based billing; or a single sign-on payment approach. Forcing every developer to implement their own approach is a real pain for the developers and the end users.  What do you think?  Application discovery and promotion could also use some work - but check this out - if you like what we are up to, we are also happy to help promote your apps.

We are starting our demo planning now for CES, Mobile World Congress and CTIA 2010.  Want to play with our toys? We want to share.  We would love to get your input for the requirements for the Android 2.0 adapter for SCout.  We would love to hear what enablers you most want.  Now is your chance to influence what we are up to.  Tweet us.  Email us. Blog.  Rant. We are listening!

A top addition to our favorite CEO rants

Short but sweet rant by our very own Tamara Casey on the most urgent – and yet simplest – change required by the wireless industry. If you agree, let us know.

Why Larry Ellison hates cloud computing

We must post this on our blog as the best CEO rant in recent memory, maybe ever.

CTIA IT San Diego

The 4DK team are gearing up for CTIA IT in San Diego October 7, 2009 to October 9, 2009.  4DK will not have a booth at the show but we will have all of our demos available for anyone that is interested.  We thought, hey, we are in the mobile space - let’s be mobile with the demos too.  This way we can show there is “no man behind the curtain” since there literally is no curtain.  Please give us a call or drop us a note if you will be at the show and would like to see what we are up to.

Why do ecosystems matter?

What is the biggest challenge any operator faces as it looks at deploying a new service? System integration and testing.  Why is this such an obstacle? Think of all the touch points involved: devices, network infrastructure, application servers, billing and operations support infrastructure.  Not to mention the challenge in figuring out the appeal of the new services to the end users, how to monetize them, etc.  Most of the innovation we are seeing in wireless right now is being driven by closed systems such as those provided by Apple, RIMM and Microsoft.  What will it take to bring innovation to all devices? An end to end ecosystem of partners.  Can it really be done you might wonder? Absolutely.  Look no further than the program launched by Alcatel-Lucent at Mobile World Congress this year - ngConnect.

ngConnect represents an amazing array of ecosystem partners developing advanced services for 4G networks.  We just returned from a working session in Ottawa, hosted by Alcatel-Lucent to discuss how we continue to evolve the services we are showcasing.  The session was well represented by the membership.  In addition to our host, Samsung, Kyocera, HP, Media Tile, Words and Numbers, QNX, Learning Mate, RebelVox, 4DK, GameStreamer and others were all in attendance.  The session presented an opportunity for us to discuss next steps for the program, how to expand the demonstrations and to network amongst the membership.

The ngConnect program was founded not only to showcase the capabilities of new technologies but also to show the power of the ecosystem being fully represented.  This gives a unique opportunity to explore the impact of new services on all the touch points in the network.  The forum provides all the partners in the ecosystem a way to contribute viable solutions to not only the technology implementation but also the business models that will be needed to make these new services attractive and pervasive.

Carriers are responding to this kind of collaboration very favorably.  Let’s face it, in today’s competitive environment many companies feel they have to do everything themselves - they feel they must control the customer relationship.  However, the reality of today’s economic environment is that R&D is often the first budget slashed. ngConnect provides a unique opportunity for collaboration on innovation.  This provides reduced cost and improved time to market for the major solution providers/system integrators while simultaneously providing an opportunity for the smaller innovators to reach an audience that it would otherwise have been difficult for them to target.
